An application was made back in July 2018 by River Oak Strategic Partners for the proposed reopening and development of Manston Airport in Kent.  (Tap in Manston in BTN Search)

In a written reply to the House of Commons, Andrew Stephenson, Minister of State at the Department for Transport, has confirmed that the deadline for the decision has been extended to 10 July to enable further work to be carried out before determination of the application.  Covid-19 is likely to be a factor as to whether the decision is further delayed.

In a statement River Oak said:  “While this further delay is perhaps understandable – and is only a matter of weeks – it is nevertheless disappointing, as this pandemic has starkly demonstrated the urgent need to address the fragility and inflexibility of the UK’s air cargo network”.

Manston Airport is just outside Ramsgate, 20mi from the port of Dover and 55mi from the nearest connection to the M25.

Various attempts in more recent years by KLM and Flybe to operate scheduled services have floundered but with a 9,000ft runway the applicant sees a future as a specialist cargo operation.  In the past it has hosted Concorde and was used by British Airways amongst others for training flights.  Whilst probably suitable it is not presently being used for aircraft parking.
