Both British Airways and Ryanair have come in for harsh words from the Competition and Markets Authority.

Termed a “non-ministerial government department” but part the Department for Business headed by Kwasi Kwarteng MP, now says that both airlines are under investigation because they “refused to give refunds to people that were unlawfully unable to fly”.

The regulator could take the carriers to court under the Enterprise Act 2002. Airlines are suppose to provide a cash refund, if asked, within seven days.

The airlines have defended themselves with BA saying that the Government is attempting to “punish further an industry that is on its knees.  We continue to offer highly flexible booking policies while operating a vastly reduced schedule and we have acted lawfully at all times.”

Ryanair for its part says it has looked at re-funds on a case-by-case basis and has paid money back “in justified cases”.  “Since June 2020, all our customers have had the ability to rebook their flights without paying a change fee.”
