Doncaster Sheffield Airport has welcomed back Wizz Air.

On offer are some 25 destinations from the South Yorkshire airport. It has also announced its results for the last 12 months described by József Váradi, Chief Executive, Wizz, as “Challenging!”

Two aircraft will be based at the airport for summer 2021 supported by around 24 pilots and 50 cabin crew.  Ground staff, including check-in and ramp, are outsourced, which significantly adds to the numbers.

Chris Harcombe, Director of Aviation Development at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “Today is something of a celebration as we’ve been eagerly waiting for the Government to give the green light to international travel.  We’re seeing plenty of pent-up demand from passengers keen to get away on a much-needed holiday in the sun and visiting loved ones abroad.”

Commenting on the results Mr Váradi said: “This was probably one of the most challenging years for the aviation industry, heavily impacted by Covid-19 related regulations. Wizz Air’s F21 revenue was down 73% and we incurred an underlying loss of €482m. Despite these unprecedented challenges, we stayed in control of our cost structure, preserved our cash position and maintained our investment grade balance sheet.

“During F21 we carried ten million passengers. Passenger and revenue figures reflect the sharp cut back in capacity throughout the year as a result of travel restrictions across Europe.

“Load factors were markedly down compared to F20 at 64%, while average revenue per passenger improved by 5.2% to €72.6 in F21.”
