IT is quickly overtaking the world of travel, acknowledged by the BBC in its popular television programme The Travel Show.

With the support of Amadeus the programme recently highlighted what is calls “the future of travel technology” hosted by regular presenter Ade Adepitan.

He asks the question “how different it will be when we explore the future” and talks about “The Internet of Things” a network of physical objects embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the internet.  Ade repeated a prediction that by 2025 globally 42bn devices will be capturing information.

The Covid crisis has without doubt accelerated technological progress dramatically typified with one’s passport, the traditional booklet soon disappearing, replaced by a secure app.  Amadeus is pushing ahead jointly with Air Europa for a digital passport, and Eurostar has something similar.

For the future at the airport everything may well be done by facial recognition including entry/check in, baggage drop-off, security and boarding.  Also perhaps purchases on the way through, plus lounge access.
