Qantas and its subsidiary Jetstar are planning flight resumption to “most international destinations” from the end of October, later than expected, but not the complete 2021 predicted by some.

The group said that the date change “aligns with the expected timeframe for Australia’s Covid-19 vaccine rollout to be effectively complete.”

At that time a total of 22 of 25 Qantas international destinations are planned to resume including services to Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles and Singapore. Jetstar plans to resume flights to all 13 of its international destinations.

Qantas says that direct routes to New York, Osaka and Santiago “won’t initially resume,” but stressed that it “remains committed to flying to these three destinations.”

June could be the decision time when the world’s airline leaders gather physically for the International Air Transport Association (IATA) AGM, the 2020 event having been cancelled.

Qantas says that it “remains in close consultation with the Federal Government around the reopening of international borders and will keep customers updated if further adjustments are required.”  The use of digital health pass apps “to help support the resumption of Covid-safe international travel,” is being looked at.
