With very limited services, mainly by easyJet, and the complete loss of Norwegian, at one time nearly 9% of passenger throughput, Gatwick, as with all other international airports struggled in 2020.  British Airways continued with reduced services to the Caribbean.

In 2019 VINCI Airports purchased a 50.01% stake of the airport, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) retaining the balance.  VINCI manages 45 airports in 12 countries around the world with Gatwick now the largest.  GIP also owns and operates Edinburgh Airport.

Despite an encouraging start to 2020 passenger numbers at Gatwick fell 78% in the year ended 31 December 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19. The airport remained open throughout the pandemic; however all revenue streams were impacted and the collapse in passenger demand led to a £465.5m loss for the 12-month period.

A BTN COMMENT column 25 January Not all doom and gloom in anticipation of these figures, gave a clear perspective of the Gatwick future, and a breakdown of routes from 2019, a record year.
