Japanese visitors are no longer welcome in the European Union (EU) after member states reinstated a ban on non-essential travel from the country.

The ban comes after a surge in local Covid-19 cases, resulting in a state of emergency being declared across 11 prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka.

The travel ban will likely result in further flight cancellations between the world’s third largest economy and EU member countries, reported Nikkei Asia.

In December, Japan considered relaxing border restrictions for foreign tourists from lower-risk countries ahead of the Tokyo Olympics which the Japanese are enthusiastically promoting 23 July to 8 August with a build-up period for a month.

At the time of writing Japan is not on a UK red route but passengers must provide evidence of a negative Covid-19 test result taken up to three days before departure.
