Seen as a head-to-head challenge to British Airways, Lufthansa is upgrading its catering for all flights over 60min.

Unlike the Heathrow-based airline meals can only be ordered in the air.  There is no web-based facility.

Overseeing the project, to be introduced for the summer programme, is 'dean&david', Munich-based and described a “young gastronomy company” whose offerings will include a salmon avocado bowl, falafel tahini salad, crunchy chicken bowl, sweet chilli chicken sandwich, and freshly made Birchermuesli. “Best of dean&david boxes” will also be available offering a selection from the range.

Gate Gourmet is the new main caterer for Lufthansa’s European flights, and will prepare “essential components” of the meals including salads, bowls, wraps and sandwiches, “according to dean&david recipes”.

Meals and snacks will range between €2 and €12, and the menus will be complemented by cakes and snacks.

In addition Lufthansa is expanding its partnership with another famous Munich specialist Dallamayr, for its offering of inflight hot beverages, confectionery and patisseries.

Highlighted beverage prices include a bottle of tomato or orange juice, a cup of coffee, hot chocolate or tea, for €3.

Customers will also receive a bottle of water, and “a small chocolate surprise” free of charge.

There will also be a large selection of chargeable alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
