A strike at Heathrow by mainly airside staff, members of the Unite trade union, last Tuesday had no effect on the airport’s smooth operation.

The union has now chosen Thursday 17 December and Friday 18 December for further action, likely to be the two busiest days of the year since the outbreak of the pandemic in March.  The airport says it has extensive contingency plans in place which have been approved by the DfT and will ensure the airport will operate safely.

Heathrow says it has been engaged in discussions with union leadership on proposals for over six months and is very aware that financial security and certainty over roles is a key concern for staff and cause of anxiety.  It has acted in a positive manner to protect jobs.

At the present time the airport is recommending that passengers should arrive three hours ahead of the scheduled departure times for international flights and two hours for European services.  Travellers should check on their airline’s web site as cancellations are presently more frequent with carriers dropping or combining flights.  Most of the terminal facilities are open.
