Prime Minister Boris Johnson joined ministers and senior representatives of the air transport industry last Wednesday for the first meeting of the Government’s Jet Zero Council.

Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps and Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Alok Sharma chaired the meeting of the new body, tasked with making net-zero emissions possible for future flights.

Adam Morton, Chair of Sustainable Aviation, the industry collective, and Head of Environmental Technology for Rolls-Royce Plc had this to say after the meeting: The creation of the Jet Zero Council is a major milestone in Britain’s move to decarbonise aviation, and the inclusion of a wide range of expertise from Sustainable Aviation members is particularly encouraging. As our Decarbonisation Road-Map set out earlier this year, the adoption of newer, more efficient aircraft and sustainable aviation fuels can help realise the Government’s ambition to deliver jet-zero. Sustainable Aviation and our members are committed to delivering net-zero carbon emissions across UK aviation and aerospace by 2050.”

From the government side Grant Shapps added: “The Jet Zero Council is a huge step forward in making change – as we push forward with innovative technologies such as sustainable fuels and eventually fully electric planes, we will achieve guilt-free flying and boost sustainability for years to come.”
