Singapore and the United Kingdom have commenced a series of trials to test the crew module of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council Aviation Recovery Taskforce (CART)1 ‘Take-off’ guidelines.

Participating are the Singapore and UK aviation authorities, Changi and Heathrow airports and both British Airways and Singapore Airlines.

The plan is to examine all the relevant aspects of the journey in respect of air crew including how safe distancing is dealt with and, meeting all relevant customs, immigration and health requirements, observing good hand hygiene and reduced interactions with passengers.

During the layover at the respective countries, air crew remain in their crew accommodation at all times.

The measures are based on the ICAO CART guidelines to create a “clean bubble” for air crew so that flights can be operated with minimal restrictions.

Richard Moriarty, Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority said: “Aviation is an inherently international industry, so it is critical that we collaborate closely with our partners around the world to address the challenges presented by Covid-19. The UK CAA is therefore very pleased to be contributing to these trials. Ultimately, this work should help keep aviation as safe as possible for both passengers and crew throughout the current pandemic.”
